Postage meters were first used in the Netherlands in 1925.
All stamps inscribed “NEDERLAND” or “Nederland” except some Postage Due issues with town name “AMSTERDAM” replacing the country name.
Many Post Office stamps also include the name of the Dutch postal service. This name has changed over time, from PTT Post, to TPG Post, to TNT Post, and most recently to PostNL.
The stamps are grouped according to appearance of the frank and use:
A – entwined snakes at sides
B – straight line ornaments at sides
C – dentate lines at sides
D – ‘bird’ design
E – open frank, without ornament
F – winged helmet of Mercury and post horn at top outward at the left end
G – curled ornaments at sides
H – complex curved frame outward at the left end

M – semi-circles along one or more sides
N – “P/T/T” at the sides
P – rectangle with two curved inner horizontal lines

PC – stamps generated by personal computer systems or downloaded from the internet
PO – stamps generated by machines found only in post offices
PD – stamps used only to collect Postage Due

Three machines known: SR1 and SR2 have “PAKKETPOST” at bottom of TM. M# SR3 has “s-GRAVENHAGE-RERKPLEIN” at bottom of TM.
The stamps were printed on tape to be affixed to parcel post address cards and sometimes directly to the card.
Only twelve examples are known to exist, most being mint favor proof tapes with one on a parcel card.
The machines were removed from service in 1976.

The frank is a horizontal rectangle split horizontally.
The bottom segment normally contains four lines: date - time / "PTT Post / Pelmolen 5 / 3994 XX Houten"
A. Top segment contains "Frankeering / betaald Nederland" (for internal mail)
B. Top segment contains "CN22" (or "CN23"), "Port paye / Pays-Bas" (for international mail)
The machine was available only for insured, registered, or express mail, or a combination of registered and express. The service indicator appears in a horizontal rectangle left of the frank printed in red and black as follows:
• "I" + "VERZEKERD / VERVOER" and ID#, for insured (1996 only)
• "R" + "AANGETEKEND / RECOMMANDE" and ID#, for registered
• "E" + "EMS / express" and ID#, for express

NOTE: Several private posts operate in the Netherlands. A number of them frank their mail with meter stamps that resemble regular postage meter stamps. These stamps do not contain the country name but usually include the name of the delivery company (“STADSPOST”, “METROPOST”, "Van Straaten Post", etc). Examples are shown below.
Generally these companies can be classified as either local/regional private posts or national private posts. The local and regional private posts have been in existence since at least the 1970s (even as early as the 1890s for Amsterdam) and were allowed to handle local mail only. These companies have used both private adhesive stamps and meter stamps. The local private post stamps often include “Stadspost” (city post) or “Streekpost” (“regional post”) in the design.
National private posts are a much newer phenomenon. Until 2009 only PostNL (the Dutch national postal service) offered nationwide postal services, but in that year postal regulations were changed to allow national private posts in accordance with European Union market liberalization. Since then several companies have begun offering nationwide postal services along with PostNL. Most of these companies are expansions of local private posts. "SandD" (Sort and Deliver) and “Van Straaten Post” are large examples. These national private post companies and PostNL have created a national postal network that is more cooperative than competitive.
