:::: Thanks very much for the noble offer. To me it has seemed, indeed, that without certain connections and introductions, even the founder and all-time manager (me) of a subproject (ru.wikibooks) can’t expect the “responsible people” to help him with anything, even things like sabotage of the site by trolls. I hope this has changed for the better since I last wrote to the Foundation. I, myself, chose to hide the ads instead of translating them, because it seemed reasonable to assume that they are of more interest (monetary and promotional) to the Foundation, than to the Russian Wikibooks. And because they were not translated to the target group’s language (in our case, Russian), it seemed reasonable to assume that even the Foundation does not bother to spend a slightest bit of its time and/or money on translating its advertising material. ::: This is comical. An appointed representative (i. e. you) of a corporation (i. e. Wikimedia) is tactlessly suggesting that I (a long-proven, devoted Wiki-education enthusiast with no interest for or against the corporation) am biased. A mongrel mob of clueless, faceless, foreign-speaking door-to-door salesmen have knocked on Russian Wikibooks’ door and, without ceremony, are accusing the housekeeper of being “biased” against their T-shirt manufacturing company. Just you all get out of here, pests. Go do some wiki work: moving and deleting, putting templates, voting — you are much better at that than at marketing or any other form of socially constructive work. As of the hosting company itself, I know enough about them (as I mentioned, from my administrative correspondence with Angela Beasley, Florence Nibart-Devouard and Guillome Paumier) to be disappointed. You are not getting T-shirt orders from me. Nor from the people I drew to the project, I am sure. [[Участник:Ramir|Ramir]] 03:09, 8 января 2008 (UTC)

Wikibooks Embassy

Hi Ramir,

My idea with the Wikibooks Embassy would be, at least for foreign language wikibooks, for using the same useful content in multiple languages. For example, a good russian diaglogue with a corresponding audio file could be used in the russian wikibook for english and german (and any other language). Also, just communication between communities in general- for example, a russian working on a book on Cplusplus might want to ask for help from another wikibooks community with an established cplusplus wikibooks already created, or being worked on. These are the types of things Í had in mind. As far as common mistakes for russian speakers, I´ll let you know as I come across them. Also, in the future I will write to you in russian- there is just no cyrillic keyboard available to me at the moment. Let me know if you think the embassy is a good idea, and I will very soon start some serious work on the russian wikibook. -DettoAltrimenti (I have no idea where the tildas are on this keyboard!)

Ramir- I haven't been in contact since May, but I have not been spending much time on wikibooks. I am messaging you because I am intensively studying russian (preparing to move to Moscow), and you told me you were working on a book for high-level speakers who know most grammar but want to speak more precisely. I have been having problems with using my dictionary to tell the difference between prefixed verbs- for instance, the difference between If you are writing a book on grammar, I would suggest having sections for the more frequently used verbs with specific information about what each prefix means in speaking and writing- the ones I see most often are носить/нести, давать/дать, and any motion verbs. Do you know of any internet resources I could use to work on this aspect of language? Paul Lynch

Edittools with Javascript

MediaWiki:Monobook.css

  • Такой код #bodyContent a.external:hover:after …

MediaWiki:Common.css

MediaWiki:Common.js

function importScript(page, wiki) {
 var url='/w/index.php?title='+encodeURI(page.replace(' ','_'))
 +'&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s';
 if (wiki) url='http://'+wiki+'.wikipedia.org'+url;
 var s=document.createElement('script');
 s.src=url;
 s.type='text/javascript';
 document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(s);
}

аналогично имеющимся в w:MediaWiki:Common.js и w:en:MediaWiki:Common.js.

MediaWiki:Monobook.js

Ramir

.portlet ul {margin-left:0.6em}
.portlet li {list-style:none none}

Monobook.css

Hi Ramir,

As per clear consensus on Foundation-l, and as this is required (you use mediawiki software, so you should link to the software. This is a Wikimedia Project, and the servers are from Wikimedia, so the project should link to Wikipedia appropriately) I restored your edit [2] from a long time ago. I suggest that you do not remove the links again.

Hi, I learned You understand English pretty well.
Please don't remove the banners again, it is requested to leave them just as they are. Thanks for Your understanding, --Spacebirdy 21:16, 6 января 2008 (UTC)[ответить]
As I have been trying to show, my understanding is not there yet. Foremostly, I need to know who requested this or that, and whose was the alleged consensus on Foundation-l. A bird from space? Or a Babel fish? An “Eia”? As somewhat of a politician, I think it best to oppose such requests, just because they may come from mischievous anonymous adolescents. This has happened on Russian Wikibooks before, and I discussed the problem with Angela Beasley, Florence Nibart-Devouard and Guillaume Paumier, to no avail.Ramir 21:41, 6 января 2008 (UTC)[ответить]
Now, the ads. If truly required by the hosting company (Wikimedia or what ever other), I’ll put them back. But Wikimedia has already (and without approval of Russian Wikibooks’ authors) exercised its ability to put full-width ads at the top of every page of every Wikibook, in languages that the visitors of Russian Wikibooks may not understand. Okay, I suppose that was also imposed by the owner of the website. But as of the two little banners at the bottom of the page, they do not seem compulsory or important to me, since they only show in the standard Monobook skin. Hence I concluded that they are not required by the hosting company. Ramir 21:41, 6 января 2008 (UTC)[ответить]
And lastly: since I already conceded to write to a non-contributing account, in a language foreign to me and all readers of Russian Wikibooks, I have a little question: who are you, what are you, why are you spending you precious time doing this (obviously, at the request of AlexSm or some other anonymous non-contributor), and what makes you think that you have any right to make any requests in the Викиучебник educational community? Ramir 21:41, 6 января 2008 (UTC)[ответить]

She (and I) are participants on the Foundation-l mailing list, to which you are free to subscribe. This project is the subject of a thread, and the unanimous opinion of the thread at this point is that the banners in question should be restored. All members of the foundation Board of Trustees are subscribed to this list, as are all or nearly all Wikimedia stewards. Avruch 22:54, 6 января 2008 (UTC)[ответить]

Welcome, dear alleged “participants on the Foundation-l mailing list”! Wow! The mere fact that all members of the foundation Board of Trustees are subscribed, as are all or nearly all Wikimedia stewards, certainly makes the mentioned “list” a respectable authority among the Russian educational community. Could the communal consensus (preferably with direct participation of the Board) decide on this new proposal of mine: to translate the ads in question into the Chinese language? I will be waiting on your valuable input. Ramir 01:01, 7 января 2008 (UTC)[ответить]

Your sarcasm does you no credit. What you have here is not simply "the Russian educational community." You have a WikiBooks project using Wikimedia trademarks, hosted by Wikimedia and using Wikimedia (MediaWiki) software. This can only occur with the consent of the Foundation, which takes its direction from the Board and the participating communities (including this one). Your lack of respect for this system argues against your fitness to remain a sysop, and if it so chooses the Foundation can revoke that status from you. Avruch 01:06, 7 января 2008 (UTC)[ответить]

Dear anonymous alleged participant of a mailing list. Your insolent tone leaves place for only one question: what credits you? Ramir 02:29, 7 января 2008 (UTC)[ответить]
In addition, it has deeply pleased me that some considerate representative of our web hosting company has bothered to translate the advertisement (on “buying merchandise with The Foundation’s logotypes”) into our native Russian language. The Foundation surely is going to earn piles of money on T-shirts and coffee mugs! Our sincere thanks on behalf of the Russian Wikibooks. I may even consider coming back to do active work, and to invite non-anonymous, academically reputed authors back into the project. Ramir 02:37, 7 января 2008 (UTC)[ответить]
Hi. I am chapters coordinator of the Wikimedia Foundation. Whether you like it or not, the website ru.wikibooks.org is a website hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation, and as such, a Wikimedia project. What you consider "ads" are an appeal to the visitors of our website to donate to the Wikimedia Foundation, which runs essentially on private donations, from all over the world, to host the project you have the priviledge of working on. I am sorry if you felt this donation banner was an intrusive advertisement. Just know once and for all that as long as the Wikimedia Foundation hosts the project, it will be labelled as a Wikimedia projects. Before you make unbased accusations, you might try and learn a little bit about the projects you are working on, although I must say that it is hard to assume good faith at all coming from you when one sees your participations on meta, which let me think that you have a little more than an idea of what the Wikimedia Foundation is all about. In any case, thank you for keeping both logos at the bottom of the pages. Best, Notafish 12:32, 7 января 2008 (UTC)[ответить]
Let me add to this, that if you see an untranslated message, that there are ways to get it translated. Actually, everybody prefers that, and it is absolutely no intent to keep everything in English. However, maybe you can imagine that it takes a Russian person to translate this. If you would be willing to volunteer next time to help translate the messages, I am more then willing to introduce you to the responsible people. Thanks, Effeietsanders 12:37, 7 января 2008 (UTC)[ответить]
Thanks very much for the noble offer. This is comical. Ramir 03:09, 8 января 2008 (UTC)[ответить]

Privet! Is it my imagination, or is all we need to do that we get someone to do translation, and this whole issue goes away?

More on Wikipedia cruds

For those wishing to know, what kind of individuals (or, perhaps one brainsick individual writing from many accounts) I had the misfortune to encounter here, I present just two links:

Suspension of admin tools

Your actions have kept away more people than you've drawn in. Attacking the foundation (which is a non-profit charity, not a profit-making corporation), which provides the platform for the Russian Wikibooks, does not help your cause, if you are truly interested in seeing the Russian Wikibooks succeed. You've made no effort whatsoever to work with members of the foundation, contrary to remarks you've made above. I have certainly never received an email from you, nor has anyone forwarded me one.

Translations are done by the community, because we are a not-for-profit organization without much hired staff, and we depend on the people who use the projects in those languages to support them. You do not have to perform the translations if you do not wish to, but that doesn't mean you have a right to remove the untranslated text. The money that comes in from these sales goes to pay for the costs of supporting the projects. You may believe other Russian Wikibooks participants do not wish to buy them, but it is not part of the job of an admin to make that choice for them.

Russian Wikibooks is part of the Wikimedia Foundation, so when you demonstrate that you don't care for the Wikimedia Foundation's interests, you are also hurting Wikibooks. An admin on a Wikimedia project and especially one who cares enough about it to write and bring other people in to write should not be acting against the interests of Wikimedia.

I am suspending your sysop bit until a determination can be made about your suitability to this project's goals. Cary Bass, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Coordinator Bastique 00:07, 17 января 2008 (UTC)[ответить]
